Steven Wright’s Perspective
We were tempted to entitle this one The Wisdom of Steven Wright, as is our usual way of focusing our attention on the quotes of someone we believe made a difference in our lives, but in this case the title we chose was far more appropriate. Steven Wright brings a persona all his own to his standup routines, delivering his lines in a classic deadpan style, where you have the sense that no matter how bizarre the situation he’s describing that it wouldn’t surprise him or ruffle his feathers in the least.
“It doesn’t make a difference what temperature a room is, it’s always room temperature.” – Steven Wright
Aside from making us laugh, Steven shares with us a valuable lesson, that common, ordinary everyday things and events could appear quite strange from another perspective. This is an extremely valuable skill if you want to be successful at anything, for part of being successful is to not only see things in ways others might miss, but also to relate to how they view things as well.
“I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she left me before we met.” – Steven Wright
Since Steven is a comedian, among other things, it’s only fitting that much of what he says and does is done to have us laugh, but we ought to use his way of looking at things for our own benefit as well. If we see something odd or unusual based on our own perception of it, perhaps it would be best to keep our thoughts and voiced opinions about it on the lighter side. We can be far more effective while working with people if we approach things in a non-threatening, light-hearted, and humorous way.
“Hard work pays off in the future. Laziness pays off now.” – Steven Wright
What a great quote that one was! In one very short and concise sentence Mr. Wright nails it as to why so few people succeed!
“A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking.” Steven Wright
If you laughed, you saw something true about your own self in that one!
“To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research.” – Steven Wright
Since there is a great deal of “research” which goes into producing a series like this on success, we got a real chuckle out of that one. It’s a humbling thought when the laughter stops, though. Much of what we do is to find such treasure and then pass it on to others, but a great deal of it never belonged to us in the first place. May your life be richer for it, as ours is. Thank you Steven for giving us plenty to think about!
Question of the Day to Ask Ourselves
“Wouldn’t my life have more meaning if I always looked for other perspectives on things?”
