Your Attention Please
We start off today with our title borrowed from a number performed by the fabulously famous Blue Man Group. If you are one of the dozen or so people on the planet who have not seen the brilliant work of this performance art organization, please do yourself a favor and look them up on YouTube. Original, quirky, strange, unique and talented- these guys thrill audiences all over the world. So why are we talking about them today, you may ask. Well, it seems that the rather large production company we can see today originated with three friends who were interested in doing something creative and fun with their lives. By their own admission, they weren’t extremely talented musicians that might end up playing in the Philharmonic Orchestra, but they did have an interest in playing music and performing. In their own way they created an opportunity for themselves where none existed before. They didn’t join a production company so much as they made one.
At the very start of it all in 1987 to get curiosity building they would walk in character on the streets of Manhattan. The three men, Chris Wink, Matt Goldman and Phil Stanton garnered attention not only because of the theatrical makeup they wore, but also their strange behavior as they walked about. This stage of their development helped them fine tune what worked and what didn’t work as they took their production from an act in a variety show to a show of their own commissioned by Meryl Vladimer, the Artistic Director of The CLUB @ La MaMa. Today the theatrical company produces several shows with multiple performers, but the original idea of having three men in identical blue makeup and blue skull caps playing original instruments such as various plastic pipe configurations played as drums remains. The shows are a treat to watch as a great deal of innovative visual art is mixed in with the entire production.
You may be sitting there thinking, “Why can’t I create something unique and fun like that?” and if you are, you are asking yourself the wrong question. Ask yourself instead, “What can I create which would be interesting and fun that others would enjoy?” or some other enabling question like that. Remember, if we are thinking about what won’t work, what we can’t do, what wouldn’t be fun, then we will surely find that instead. You have all the creative ability these men had and more. Seriously, it’s not something contained in our minds, it’s something we can draw from Spirit. In order to bring forth the results these guys did, we need to be an open channel through which that Creative Spirit can flow. Before long, your internal vision can become a reality that you and others will be able to process using your Rods and Cones. (hint, hint)
