Dealing With It
Sometimes life throws us a major curve ball and we suddenly find ourselves in what may seem like a very negative situation. What happens next is really a product of how we deal with it and there’s a simple three-step process we should want to begin so as we don’t make matters worse. Here it is:
One– Think about all of the things you are grateful for. Make a list of them on paper, this list should be at least 30 to 50 items long. If we really think about it, it could be much longer. Think of the blessings such as the gift of sight, of hearing, of having both hands and both legs, if those things apply. Think of the roof over your head if you have one, or the food on the table if you have some. Think of the gift of a new day with fresh opportunities. Think of the chance to begin anew and design things your way. Think of the family you have, the love that you share and more. Think of the country you were born in and the blessings that this fact bestowed upon you. Write them down, then read them aloud in the mirror for the next 21 days at least.
Two– Figure out what’s good about your changed situation. Every adversity we face has opportunities hidden within it. Think of the ways you can grow from here, think of what hidden advantages you’ve possibly acquired. Make a list of everything that is even a slight improvement from where you were before. It could be you’ve learned to be more careful, it could be that a burden was lifted. Remember that focusing on the negative of the situation brings you more negative feelings and things so don’t go there. Keep your thoughts on what you’ve gained.
Three– Develop plans of action. Getting busy immediately dulls the pain of a bad experience. Find things to do that will benefit you now and in the future. Perhaps you can use this event as a springboard to starting a healthy eating program or installing a new exercise routine. Maybe you can do things to now that you thought you had to put off before.
If we follow this simple plan, we can quickly change the way that we feel from a negative state of mind to a positive one. The positive state of mind, also known as “feeling good” is what attracts to us those things we desire most. We want to take these constructive steps for our own benefit because what we are deep down inside determines our ultimate outcome- good or bad.
