“For happiness one needs security, but joy can spring like a flower even from the cliffs of despair.”- Anne Morrow Lindbergh

This one’s pretty cool, something to feel good about. We all like to think we have some positive influence in helping others, even hardened criminals have been known for their generosity with their ill-gotten gains. Why would they care about doing something nice for someone else despite the fact that they think their best source of revenue is to steal it from someone else? Because they crave the feeling of being loved and appreciated just like anyone else does.
While we don’t think most people would stoop to illegal activity so as to finance their charitable works, we do believe that the wish to make a measurable difference in someone’s life is a universal urge. It’s sort of like it was hard-wired into our being. Maybe it was!
Our influence, fortunately for us, goes far beyond what we can possibly see. This alone is reason enough for us to wish to keep it positive. A simple act of kindness, a random word of encouragement, or even a smile can go a long way towards having someone else feel better about themselves. The funny thing about that is that there is no boundaries from there. Like a pebble tossed into a still pond, the circle of influence expands from that point outward until every point around the entire pond is touched. How could such a small object have that much influence? It’s amazing isn’t it? Suppose the wave startles a frog and it hops in, then what? It’s an even bigger splash and wave.
So what’s the point here? You don’t have to be mighty to make a huge difference in the lives of others, you only need to try to be uplifting, happy, joyous, and loving to those people you meet. Some of them, perhaps many of them, will take your kindness and bestow it on people you’ll never know. As you reflect on how that happens, how do you feel? Doesn’t it feel good to be such a positive engine of change? Doesn’t it encourage you to do more?
We’ll tell you what, if you are feeling burned out, consider this for a few moments… how many people have had a strong positive influence on you? Wasn’t what they said or did wonderful, uplifting, and warm? Pass it on!
Question of the Day to Ask Ourselves
“What can I do today to brighten someone else’s day, and mine in the process?”
