Good News! Stronger Placebos
There’s some good news in pharmacology these days, placebos are getting stronger and stronger! Okay, that’s a real head scratcher, isn’t it? Most of us are familiar with why placebos are given, but we’ll go over that just in case. Placebos are pills which contain no medicine at all, and they are used in double-blind studies to measure the extent of the effects of the actual medicine as compared to them.
A double-blind study is where neither the patient or the person giving the patient the pill- know which pills are real and which have no medicine in them. Studies are conducted this way in order to separate out the healing effects of the mind from being what medicine is making someone feel better. In other words, if the placebo effect is stronger than the medicine being administered in the study, then the odds are the actual medicine isn’t doing much good.
Scientists who study medicine are running into the problem that people in these studies are reporting more and more that they feel better regardless of whether the pill was real or not. It sounds like we’ve developed a stronger fake pill, doesn’t it? What’s likely happening is that people are changing their level of belief in whether a medicines work overall, and that shift in their level of confidence in these drugs is reflected in the the results of these studies. There’s a problem here for the pharmaceutical companies trying to evaluate their products- it’s getting tougher to show that their pill is working than it used to be!
While this is bad news for those who want to show that their medicine actually works, it’s good news for us, and for a couple of reasons. One is that it underscores the powerful effects of the mind in regards to belief. The more faith we have in a particular outcome, the more likely that we will get the results we want. We dare say this doesn’t only apply to the world of medicine. The other is that any new drugs coming down the pike to alleviate human suffering are going to have to meet this higher standard before they get approved. This is going to eliminate a lot of borderline medications, some with severe side effects, from contention.
Our bottom line is this, don’t underestimate the power of belief. When you believe you’ll be getting the results your after- in anything- you summon powerful forces both in your mind and through The Law of Attraction to get what you desire. That really is good news, isn’t it?
Question of the Day to Ask Ourselves
“What should I increase my level of belief of about myself so I get the results I seek?”
